A neuronal model of the language cortex

چکیده
We modelled language-learning processes in a brain-inspired model of the language cortex. The network consisted of neuron-like elements (graded-response units) and mimicked the neuroanatomical areas in the perisylvian language cortex and the intrinsic and mutual connections within and between them. Speaking words creates correlated activity in motor and auditory cortical systems. This correlated activity might play an important role in setting up word representations at the neuronal level [D.B. Fry, The development of the phonological system in the normal and deaf child, in: F. Smith, F.A. Miller, (Eds.), The genesis of language MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 1966, pp. 187–206; F. Pulvermüller, Words in the Brain’s Language, Behav. Brain Sci. 22 (1999) 253–279]. We simulated this language-learning process and used the network to simulate neurophysiological brain responses to words and meaningless ‘‘pseudowords’’ as they have been documented using EEG and MEG. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. The effect of Gallic acid on prenatal entorhinal cortex and CA1/CA3 hippocampal areas in trimethyltin intoxication rat
Background: Prenatal intoxication with trimethyletin (TMT) induces widespread neuronal death in the central nervous system by inducing oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant effect of gallic acid (GA) on the neuronal density of the entorhinal cortex, hippocampal pyramidal cells and oxidative stress parameters in the fetal forebrain following TMT intoxication. ...
متن کاملEffects of Dimethyl Sulfoxide on Neuronal Response Characteristics in Deep Layers of Rat Barrel Cortex
Introduction: Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a chemical often used as a solvent for waterinsoluble drugs. In this study, we evaluated the effect of intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of DMSO on neural response characteristics (in 1200–1500 μm depth) of the rat barrel cortex. Methods: DMSO solution was prepared in 10% v/v concentration and injected into the later...
متن کاملNeuropathological Changes in Brain Cortex and Hippocampus in a Rat Model of Alzheimer’s Disease
Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with progressive loss of cognitive abilities and memory loss. The aim of this study was to compare neuropathological changes in hippocampus and brain cortex in a rat model of AD. Methods: Adult male Albino Wistar rats (weighing 250-300 g) were used for behavioral and histopathological studies. The rats were randomly assigned t...
متن کاملNeuronal response properties of somatosensory cortex (layer IV) are modulated following experience dependent plasticity in c-fiber depleted rats
Previous studies have shown that the receptive field properties, spontaneous activity and spatio-temporal interactions of low-threshold mechanical somatosensory cells in the barrel cortex are influenced by C-fibers. In this study, we examined the effect of C-fiber depletion on response properties of barrel cortex neurons following experience dependent plasticity. Methods: In this study, exte...
متن کاملModulatory Effects of Memantine on Neuronal Response Properties in Rat Barrel Cortex
Introduction: Memantine as N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor antagonist is used in some neurological disorders. It has been reported that memantine has modulatory effects on the somatosensory information processing in healthy subjects. This study investigated the effect of memantine on electrophysiological properties of barrel cortex neurons in male rats. Methods: Single unit recording ...
متن کاملEffect of paraoxon on the synaptosomal GABA uptake in rat hippocampus and cerebral cortex
Introduction: Paraoxon (the neurotoxic metabolite of organophosphorus (OP) insecticide, parathion) exerts acute toxicity by inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), leading to the accumulation of acetylcholine in cholinergic synapses and hence overstimulation of the cholinergic system. Since, reports on changes in the level of γ- amino butyric acid (GABA) during OP-induced convulsion have bee...
